Summary

Prof. Dipl. Theol. Univ. Peter Schmieder has proven his outstanding leadership skills for a period of more than ten years by creating, developing, and enhancing the high-quality Silicon Valley Venture Development Program at Deggendorf Institute of Technology. The program increases the entrepreneurial skill set of regional economics, management and matrix teams by providing a scientifically based, constant and mentored process over a period of at least nine months. An invention is fed with a qualified market entry and development strategy, a relevant and high-class ecosystem of qualified mentors, customers, investors. As excellent networker Peter drives successful venture planning and development. He brings both of two worlds together: German invention and Silicon Valley mindset. The greatest challenge for technical inventions and services is the successful transformation into the market. Especially in Germany, the country of excellent engineers, inventions often fail because of the wrong market strategy for non-segmented markets, wrong timing, and missing customer focus. Peter is the most important driver in achieving the Free State of Bavaria promoting the Silicon Valley Program and further extending it into a DIT entrepreneur campus called “Bavarian Innovation Transformation Center” in Oberschneiding. He managed to bring a top-class team of international professors and top global mentors to the campus, with whom the entire circle of venture scaling and acceleration can be mapped. This ensures a wide extension of the program in 2022.

Peter Schmieder’s students always value him for his excellent teaching in business management and entrepreneurship. A large number of awards proves that.

IMPACT STORY

Impacting lifes

Over the last decade the quality of the program and ventures even spread word within the Silicon Valley ecosystem itself. Max – a Silicon Valley native and just finishing his degree at the outstanding Krannert School of Business out of Purdue – called Peter of whom he heard as “Peter´s Program” and made 2018 the leap across the Atlantic Ocean into the Silicon Valley Program as part of his MBA degree. He took a Bavarian innovation from the food industry, formed an international venture team, worked hard in the academically validated process. Finally, he pitched in front of a sophisticated panel and his venture eventually failed. He learned “entrepreneurship, especially scaling, is a profession of its own. You are forced to get out of an engineer´s lab into the brains and hearts of customers, markets and investors. You need unique customer´s and markets’ insights and have almost to adopt the investor´s mindset. I failed – but I learned a paramount bunch of lessions in the program I would have never learned at university”. Max wrote his Master´s Thesis “StartUp Evaluation” from an Investor´s and VC´s perspective about these lessions learned and earned an A+. Because of his experience he was hired by the Silicon Valley Bank in Los Angeles/Irvine where he was early promoted to Senior Associate for Corporate Venture Capital Relationships. One of the first things he did: Introducing the Silicon Valley Bank in Europe with Peter and the SVP to support further ventures in the most challenging world of a StartUp.

LEARNINGS

Lessons learned

In 12 years of Silicon Valley Program, teams have learned a lot - often the hard way. So here is the Top 10 list for successful ventures:

1. Success happens on the street – Please leave your high tech lab!
Get unique insights into the market not just the technology.

2. Fail quick and learn fast – if you never failed you never tried
Failure is not an option – Failure is mandatory and the key to your success.

3. Your team is everything – what is an entrepreneur without followers – a man talking a walk
A great innovation and a mediocre team will fail – a mediocre innovation and a great team will succeed.

4. No one throws money at you – you have to earn it
Prove everything: your beachhead market, your go-to-market, your honest financials
Think big – it will get smaller by itself

5. Aim for excellence – and you reach very good! Aim for average – and you reach nothing

6. Trust science – it is the only thing to rely on
Be almost fanatically disciplined and follow the scientific validated path towards impact readiness

7. Check your Ego at the front door
If you want to walk into your customers shoes – take off your own

8. Learn from customers – do not sell your product – get your customers experience
The worm is for the fish not for the fisherman

9. Money is not best you can get – honest feedback is the best you can get
If you ask for money you will get advice – If you ask for advice you will get help

10. Successful Entrepreneurs are Destroyers and Transformers
Creative destruction and transformation of technology into great products

FUTURE PLANS

What's coming?

With the potential we have now with our new DIT Entrepreneur Campus in Oberschneiding, the Bavarian Innovation Transformation Center, and our enhanced scientific team we combine excellent competencies in the areas of methodology of scale, economy of scale, ecosystem of scale, funding of scale and skills of scale together with a comprehensive network including regional, national and international economy, an investors ecosystem, business incubators and venture consultancies. This is the strong foundation to even enhance the Silicon Valley Program to the Silicon Valley School covering even further aspects of venture development. The enhance scientific team also allows an even stronger link between teaching and entrepreneurial practice. In addition, we will focus also in German intrapreneurship to strength the German Small and medium businesses.
